NZ is a beautiful country. It has its faults: the currency is crap, several earth quakes and volcanic eruptions are overdue, and the Maori/ Pacific islander violence is bad. Not all Maori are violent, just as not all irish are violent. However, there is a vocal minority of indigenous NW's who cause a lot of trouble. Their motor bike gangs and other gangs are usually racially driven. If you want to see a scary movie, then watch 'Once were warriors'. It's a brilliant movie that even shocked hard American gangsters. Anyway, on the positive side, the scenery is beautiful, the rivers are spectacular and the air is unpolluted. As beautiful as all this seems, the only thing that bothered me about NZ was the noticeable absence of bird song. In Aus, you can't go anywhere along the East coast and hear birds carrolling, trilling or whatever. In NZ, it's zip. It's quite a strange sensation which gave me the sensation of being in a barren land. Kiwi people are fanatical about their sport and will kill over cricket or rugby. They've never forgiven Australia over the underarm incident thirty years ago in cricket. Anyway, go to NZ, but don't say you weren't warned about ethnic gangs, geo-thermal eruptions, tsunamis, boredom and whatever. Come to Australia and be bitten by snakes, spiders, scorpions, or drown at our beaches, because emigrants can't swim or survive the rips, the rapids, or our deserts- not to mention crocodiles, sharks, Melbourne Mafia (mafia murders everyday). Where ever you go, there are problems. Stay in Ireland, but ask Jesus to come into your heart and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you and bless you and your country. What I had in mind was the soldiers and explorers, Stanley, Livingstone and the like, we see the engravings of these men and there they are in their neat Victorian dress, even in the jungle (not sure just how neat they were, but that's beside the point). The modern world has done away with any sort of formality, and as a consequence, standard of behaviour, as made clear by these American military 'men' has dissapeared! Point taken! Because of the rule that all caholic landowners property had to be divided between thw sons the properties got smaller and smaller. Education was denied to Catholics therefore the only outlets were inherit smallholding or join the church. This policy led to the famine where the land could not sustain the population dependant on it. Cromwell certainly was not a benign force in Irish history. Irish people were not treated equally in the British empire. Even though you support the British Empire your vision of its impact on Ireland is seriously flawed. Many Irish people flourished in English society but to do so they definitely played down their Irishness.
